"An amazingly talented spoken word artist" MTV

From acclaimed performance poet Sophia Thakur comes a powerful first collection of poems exploring issues of identity, difference, faith, relationships, fear, loss and joy. Intricate, evocative and dazzling – these are poems that explore the experiences that connect people; they encourage readers to look within and explore the tendencies of the heart.

Sophia Thakur won her first poetry award at 18, and since then she has performed at Glastonbury, Stylist’s Remarkable Women Awards, international conferences, and given multiple TED talks. She is a youth ambassador for the betterment of young black girls, and has worked with charities including Cancer Research UK, and with brands such as MTV, Samsung and Nike. Sophia also worked with Walker Books in 2017 to create a piece of poetry inspired by The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas called “Poetry for the Mandem”. Sophia combines words with fashion, sport, music and social responsibility to push the traditional boundaries of poetry.

4/5… This collection of poetry was raw, direct and thought provoking

Books and Brews

Highly recommended. Her book shows that performance poetry can be read and enjoyed over again in written form. I can recommend this book for teenage readers and also for adults who enjoy savouring the language of poetry.

This is an accessible and instructive book for teenagers wanting to write poetry and give voice to their own experiences.
