Early Learning: Verse & Rhymes

Parents and carers will welcome this new and original action rhyme book which helps them to play creatively with babies and toddlers, and have lots of fun.

Specially devised to entertain and delight very young children (and incidentally to help along their vocabulary and cognitive skills) here are sixteen original play-rhymes with child-friendly illustrations to cover the events of a baby's or toddler's day, and guidance on how to play:

Tickle Beetle runs round your tummy,
Tickle Beetle jumps on your nose,
Tickle Beetle runs down your leg
And jumps up and down on your toes,
Up and down, up and down,
He jumps up and down on your toes!

The rhymes cover the day, from morning playtime and lunchtime to being out and about, teatime, evening playtime, bathtime and bedtime. They feature jungle animals, farm animals, buzzing bees, big green crocodiles of course, tractors, rockets, aeroplanes – and lots more!

Creators

Jane Newberry spent over twenty years sharing music and rhyme with parents and toddlers, whilst bringing up her four children. Her weekly group of eight mushroomed quickly to four groups and over 100 children, with a diverse range of parents/carers and grandparents. Working for eight years with the National Childbirth Trust gave Jane a special insight into the challenges of 21st century parenting. She has taught her unique brand of playsongs to two separate nursery schools. Passionate about music education, she has published two songbooks, 'A Sackful of Songs' and 'A Sackful of Christmas' (Cramer Music). Jane lives in Cornwall, where she works as a freelance music education specialist with the National Trust as well as schools and nurseries.

Carolina Rabei gained a BA in Graphic Design in Moldova and a distinction in Children’s Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art. Her artwork is a unique mix of traditional and digital techniques. Her first picture book, Snow (Faber) beautifully illustrates Walter de la Mare’s poem and was published to critical acclaim: it was nominated three times for the Kate Greenaway Medal and featured on The Independent's list of '11 Best Books for 4 to 7-Year-Olds'. Carolina is also illustrator of 'Binky's Time to Fly' for Otter-Barry Books (2019).
