Mum insists that there’s no such thing as monsters, but they keep interrupting the girl’s dreams. They gobble up all the apple pies and ruin all the fairground rides. But does she even like those things? Perhaps the monsters might be more fun instead?
Creators
Jackie Hosking is a Nigerian-born Cornish Australian who moved to Australia when she was ten. Jackie began writing for children after completing a creative writing course at her local community house in a seaside town off The Great Ocean Road in Victoria. In 2012 she was awarded a Maurice Saxby Mentorship and in 2011 she mentored a Maurice Saxby Mentee on writing in rhyme. Her picture book The Croc and the Platypus was published by Walker Books Australia in 2014 and she is pleased to report that she has another two picture books with Walker in the wings. In 2019 Jackie was awarded a May Gibbs Creative Time Fellowship where she spent a month in Canberra. Jackie loves to write in rhyme and when she’s not writing in rhyme she enjoys helping others with their rhyme.
Katrin Dreiling is a German-born language teacher but moved to Australia with her husband and three children and became an illustrator. She creates quirky illustrations that feature different media, such as gouache, watercolour, coloured pencils, and ink. She always aims to make her illustrations look as child-like as possible featuring wonky perspectives and fun characters. In her free time, Katrin loves to hang with her family and her two dogs Loki and Trudy and drinks way too many cups of coffee.

We quite like the twist upon monsters in this story, that instead of them being scary, they are actually fun instead! We are big fans of rhyme, and the rhythm in the story was excellent. (A great book to be read aloud this Halloween!) This girl’s imagination is fantastic. We are quite please to inform you all that Abby and my (Zeke’s!) imagination is just as active as this girl’s! Finally, how awesome were Katrin’s illustrations?! So fun, and we adored the fine line work.
