Reviews
Piper at the Gates of Dusk is rich in action, intrigue and politics. There is a desperate attempt to save the only world they now have and the only world the young people have ever known. Patrick Ness has a sharp eye for teenage fears and hopes. His teen-aged protagonists struggle to be heard over overbearing adults who brush them off as too young to have valid solutions to the problems presented. I raced through this book with its never ending action and intrigue. With themes of activism, social justice, racism, disability and gender dysphoria Piper at the Gates of Dusk is a book for our times.

The plot has so much stuffed in that it *should* feel like too much for a short-for-the-genre novel, but it really doesn’t!! My favourite part aside from the characters is the folktale-esque story, that’s events are now playing out in the real world. Stakes? Sky high. Tension? Palpable. Mystery? In abundance. This a timely release with strong themes of propaganda, colonisation, power struggles and the dangers of a divided society. These topics are handled with incredible nuance and I can’t wait to see what happens next

Part adventure, part thriller, it sucks you into the story and you can’t stop until you solve the mystery. I really enjoyed this book and going back to the world of the Noise. Patrick Ness is really good at showing how misinformation and fear can form a dangerous combination with disastrous consequences.

This was such a strong YA story. You can immediately see why people love this world and now I fully get the hype. I’ll definitely be going back to read the original properly. I loved the Noise, the Land and the sci fi elements. It all felt vivid, immersive and just different in the best way. It also explores some really strong themes around identity, prejudice and belonging, and I loved how naturally they were woven into the story.

We’re back in a familiar world (chaos walking) and Ness’ imagery and mannerisms with writing are incredibly powerful. He truly encapsulates the raw emotions of what it is to be human. Of course like all of Patrick’s books it is filled with gripping tension, heartbreak and high stakes. ( I was sobbing my eyes out and had to put the book down at one point) If you read the chaos walking series you are absolutely going to love returning back to this world.
