Walker Books Australia to partner with new children’s publishing house, Magic Cat

A new children’s publishing house founded by award-winning publishers Rachel Williams and Jenny Broom will launch in early 2020, with 10 titles releasing in its first year. Magic Cat will publish gift and non-fiction titles that celebrate the art of storytelling, for readers 0-12.

Both mums to young children, Williams and Broom cite ‘baby brain’ as their competitive advantage in an industry ever-more reliant on its children’s sector. “We are in a period of our lives in which we are being inspired by our children every day. It is crucial that we make the most of this opportunity and harness its creative potential,” said Broom.

Rachel and Jenny have an impressive track record and Magic Cat will be the pair’s third creative venture together – but their first with independent backing. Both are credited with pioneering a renaissance in illustrated children’s non-fiction through their previous imprints, Big Picture Press and Wide Eyed Editions, and the best-selling series Little People Big Dreams, which they commissioned for the Frances Lincoln Children’s Books imprint. Williams says that the new company will “reflect what we do best: create profit with beautiful books that inspire care for our world.”

Partnering with Amanda Wood, founding Publisher at Templar and creator of the best-selling Ology series, they will also join forces with Mrs Wang Yihua’s team at The Ronshin Group in China. Magic Cat will operate out of its office at Second Home, London Fields, which boasts an on-site nursery, and will publish its first title in the UK in March 2020.

Walker Books Australia will be distributing Magic Cat throughout Australia and New Zealand.

"We are excited to partner with Magic Cat, Rachel Williams and Jenny Broom are pioneers in the field of illustrated children’s non-fiction. Their partnership brought to life the best-selling Little People Big Dreams series which has gone onto sell more than 1.5 million copies in the English language. I am sure booksellers will be just as excited as we are to see what they will bring to life under their new independent venture, Magic Cat!” says Angela Van Den Belt, President of Walker Books Australia and New Zealand.

“I grew up reading Walker Books from my home in Melbourne and am delighted to be partnering with one of Australia’s best independents on the distribution of our new list,” says Magic Cat Publisher, Rachel Williams.

Williams and Broom were inspired to launch their new venture against an industry backdrop featuring a 78% female workforce, but reporting a persistent gender pay gap and increasing male-dominance at director level.

Magic Cat will inspire a new generation of readers, encouraging them to discover the world around them and live out their dreams, whatever their background, gender or ethnicity.

Magic Cat will be available in ANZ early 2020.
