Short-listed for the Kids Own Australian Literature Award

Children from across New South Wales have nominated their favourite Australian children’s book titles for KOALA 2017. There are four categories: picture books, younger readers, older readers, and fiction for Year 7 to Year 9 readers. Ten books make the shortlist in each category each year.

KOALA books must be Australian, to encourage young Australians to appreciate Australian literature, and have been published within the last ten years to qualify.

By creating an award system ranked by children, KOALA gives these readers the opportunity to voice the books that they, the Australian children, engage with – which enables a tailoring of their reading experiences, by creating more of the books that they love.

The shortlist is then integrated into NSW classrooms, where children decide and vote for winners. Winners are announced at KOALA’s Awards Day on the 9th of November, where children and authors come together to meet each other, furthering young readers’ interest and excitement for Australian books.
