Circle by Jeannie Baker takes out the Children’s category at the 2017 Indie Awards!

Walker Books is thrilled to celebrate Circle by Jeannie Baker, which has taken out the Children’s category at the 2017 Indie Awards announced at the Leading Edge Books Annual Conference Awards Dinner last night.

The Indie Book Awards (the ‘Indies’) as chosen by independent booksellers, members of Leading Edge Books, reward and promote excellence in Australian writing.

First published in June last year, Circle is a beautifully illustrated story which follows the migration of the Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica baueri) from Australia through Southeast Asia to its Alaskan breeding grounds and then back to Australia.

The Bar-tailed Godwit’s 11,000 kilometre journey from their breeding grounds in Alaska across the Pacific Ocean to Australia or New Zealand is the longest unbroken migration of any animal. The birds follow invisible pathways in the sky, which they have followed for thousands of years.

Circle’s spectacular landscapes follow the Godwit’s flight path, from Arctic icebergs in the north to tropical golden beaches in the south across thousands of kilometres of Pacific Ocean, capturing the sheer wonder of this migratory circle of life, reminding us of the global interdependence of nature.

As with each of Jeannie’s picture books, Circle is illustrated with the tactile, exquisitely detailed and textured collages she is famous for. The artworks themselves have been exhibited in a travelling national exhibition.

Says Angela Van Den Belt, President of Walker Books Australia, “Circle has contributed to the Australian cultural and educational landscape enormously. What puts Jeannie in a category of her own is that she always has ideas that are significant, that have a message and with the medium of collage they are always very unique in approach. To publish a Jeannie Baker book is an event, it is an exceptional moment for all of us, and one to be cherished. We couldn’t be happier as Jeannie’s global publisher”.

Circle has also been included on the 2017 ABIA Awards Children’s category longlist. The shortlist will be announced on April 9, and the winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony on May 25.
