Celine Kiernan’s The Wild Magic Middle-Grade Trilogy Acquired by Walker Books

In spring 2018, Walker Books will publish the first book in The Wild Magic trilogy, a middle-grade fantasy series about witches and forbidden magic, from award-winning Irish author Celine Kiernan, described by the Sunday Independent as “Ireland’s answer to JK Rowling”. Commissioning Editor Annalie Grainger acquired world English language rights to the novel in a three-book deal, from Sallyanne Sweeney at Mulcahy Associates.

The Wild Magic trilogy tells the story of Mup, a young girl who must cross the borders of the mundane world with her mam and enter Witches’ Borough, a suppressed magical realm reminiscent of Narnia, to rescue her father. The witches are pale, cold and relentless, and Mam is strange on this side of the border – striding, powerful and distant. Even if they can save Dad, Mup is not sure that anything will ever be the same again…

Celine Kiernan is the author of The Moorehawke Trilogy, a political fantasy set in an alternate Renaissance Europe. It won the 2009 Readers’ Association of Ireland Award for best book and was shortlisted for the 2009 Irish Book Awards in two categories (best newcomer and best children's book). The trilogy has been translated into nine languages and published in the English language territories of the UK, US and AUS/NZ. Into the Grey, a YA standalone, was published by Walker in 2013 and was the first book to win both the Children’s Books Ireland (CBI) Book of the Year Award and the CBI Children’s Choice Award. It also won the 2013 Readers’ Association of Ireland (RAI) Book of the Year Award and was shortlisted for the 2014 Japanese Sakura Medal.

Grainger comments: “Beautifully written and haunting, with a compelling magical adventure, this is a modern classic in the making. We are incredibly proud to be publishing Celine’s trilogy at Walker.”

Celine Kiernan said: “I'm so thrilled to be working with Walker again. Mup, Crow and the Raggedy Witches couldn't have found a better family.”

Sweeney said: “Celine is an extraordinary writer and this, her first fantasy series for middle-grade readers, is a treat from start to finish. I'm delighted to have the perfect home in Walker Books for this new phase in Celine's career.”

Walker Books will publish the first book in The Wild Magic trilogy, The Raggedy Witches, in February 2018. The second and third books will follow in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
