The Visconti House

By Elsbeth Edgar

**eBook Edition** Every house has a story to tell.

Laura Horton doesn’t know if the rumours about Leon Murphy are true, but she keeps her distance anyway. She soon finds she has more in common with Leon than she first thought. They are both drawn to the secrets surrounding the Visconti House. When Laura and Leon take an unexpected journey into the past, it will change their lives – and open their hearts – forever. The Visconti House by Australian author Elsbeth Edgar is a coming-of-age story perfect for readers growing up and finding their place in their world. This book is also a modern-day love story intertwined with an engaging historical mystery. Check out Elsbeth’s other great junior fiction novels: On Orchard Road and In the Wings. “Edgar’s debut is a captivating story of friendship, mystery, and romance … her evocative writing and inviting characters will draw readers in to this gentle examination of acceptance, diversity, and self-esteem.”Publishers Weekly “Part realistic fiction, part mystery, and part romance, Edgar’s first novel is a good blend of simple prose and descriptive imagery and language … Readers will identify with Laura’s desire to fit in and root for the friendship that develops between the two characters.” School Library Journal “Debut author Edgar’s quiet, old-fashioned storytelling, in which the children can sound older than their years, celebrates curiosity, hidden treasures and impromptu gatherings with spirited and creative family members … Laura also discovers friendship, romance and accepting the differences in herself and others.” Kirkus Reviews “Convincing dialogue and well-drawn characters, both major and minor, bring energy to the story, which focuses on Laura, her slowly developing friendship with Leon, and the changes brought about by the experiences they share. The house’s history tinges the quiet story with faded romance and sadness, but that tone is counterbalanced by the increasing vividness and confidence of Laura’s character. A fine, sensitive first novel by an Australian writer.” Booklist “Well-rounded characters, with their eccentric families and friends, support a fascinating plot that holds the reader’s interest right to the end.” Magpies magazine

About the author

After completing her university course (majoring in French Literature) and teaching for one year, Elsbeth Edgar travelled overland from Katmandu to London. For four years she spent the winter months working in London and the summer months travelling in Europe. When she returned to Melbourne she taught English as a second language to the first wave of Vietnamese refugees for several years, before moving to Canberra to study for her Graduate Diploma in Librarianship. Elsbeth took time off to raise her children before returning to library work when her children were all at school. She has always written but, once she had children, began writing stories for them and in turn rediscovered her love of children’s literature.
