In the Wings

By Elsbeth Edgar

**eBook Edition** How can you dream of being an actor when you suffer terrible stage fright?

Ella Jamison dreams of acting. But it’s an impossible dream when you suffer from stage fright. Stuck in the backstage crew for the school play, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ella watches her friends and conceited new boy Sam tread the boards. But first impressions can be deceiving. And help can arrive when you least expect it. Is being an actor only a fantasy when you suffer from terrible stage fright? This is the question Australian author Elsbeth Edgar poses to readers in her latest book, In the Wings. This moving coming-of-age story is about self-discovery and overcoming hardships with the help of family and friends. Check out Elsbeth’s other great junior fiction novels: The Visconti House and On Orchard Road. “In the Wings is a story that is unafraid to plumb the depths of the human condition as it plays out in the lives of Ella and her friends and family … This book is engaging from first page to last. It is well-crafted, buoyed with conflict, tension and mystery with believable, three-dimensional characters. A rewarding read that stays close on your hells well after you’ve closed the covers. Recommended.” Magpies magazine “This is a delightful book, with a sympathetic protagonist, a range of interesting and believable characters and an insight into the work that occurs behind the scenes of a school play.” Reading Time magazine “An easy-to-read story that will delight its readers, especially girls and those who are interested in acting and stage production.” ReadPlus “A wonderfully told tale about fear, first impressions, friends and family. It is about facing up to things that scare you and embracing that which may embarrass you. Ella is a blend of strength and fragility. … This book is a touching story that is delivered with a gentle touch. It draws you in and wraps around you. A lovely read.” The Kylie Verse

About the author

After completing her university course (majoring in French Literature) and teaching for one year, Elsbeth Edgar travelled overland from Katmandu to London. For four years she spent the winter months working in London and the summer months travelling in Europe. When she returned to Melbourne she taught English as a second language to the first wave of Vietnamese refugees for several years, before moving to Canberra to study for her Graduate Diploma in Librarianship. Elsbeth took time off to raise her children before returning to library work when her children were all at school. She has always written but, once she had children, began writing stories for them and in turn rediscovered her love of children’s literature.
