Come by Chance

By Madeleine Winch
Illustrated by Madeleine Winch

A warm and tender tale of friendship, compassion, generosity and hospitality.

Out walking far away from anywhere, Bertha comes across a little abandoned tumbledown house. She sets about repairing the rundown cottage and soon settles into her new cosy home which she names ‘Come by Chance.’ There she lives, all alone, until one wet and wintry night when, one by one animals come from far and wide to take refuge in her shelter ...

  • ‘Come by Chance’ actually exists in the Australian bush. Having been salvaged, the house is now loved and lived in by two caring people and their ever-increasing ‘family’ of stray and needy animal friends. As in the story, the house is brimming with life, and newcomers are soon made to feel at home.
  • Part of the Walker Classic series of Australian and New Zealand picture books which feature new design and reproduction, as well as letters and notes from the writers and illustrators
