About the author

Jules Verne (1828-1905) was born in Nantes, western France. His career as a novelist was launched in 1863 with the adventure story Five Weeks in a Balloon. He went on to write over eighty books including his most successful stories Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1869), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Verne was a true inventor and visionary, posssessed with a unique image of the future - several of the innovations depicted in his stories presaged real scientific developments. He remains one of the best-loved and most frquently translated French authors.
