After Eli

By Rebecca Rupp

“Nostalgic . . . interestingly quirky. . . . A tribute to those left behind.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

When Daniel’s brother Eli is killed at war, Daniel considers the history of unusual fatalities to determine what makes a death — or a life — matter. Danny creates a Book of the Dead — an old binder that he fills with details about dead people, how they died, and, most important, for what purpose. Eventually Daniel is prompted to look up from his notebook of death and questions to make new friends and be swept into the moments that start life rolling again.

  • Now in paperback, a book about loss and recovery, featuring a male protagonist and told in the first person.
  • Rebecca Rupp has found her voice in the realm of the middle-grade realistic novel, exploring big questions and serious issues with intelligence, humor, and utterly guileless humanity; After Eli has received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Booklist, and Kirkus Reviews.
  • References to the war in Afghanistan tell readers that the story is a very contemporary one, exploring the questions they themselves might have about war, about death, and about moving on.

About the author

Rebecca Rupp is the beloved author of more than a dozen books for young readers, among them The Dragon of Lonely Island, Sarah Simpson's Rules for Living, and Octavia Boone's Big Questions About Life, the Universe, and Everything. About After Eli, she says, "Benjamin Franklin once said, 'There never was a good war or a bad peace.' As a writer during the Revolution, he knew what he was talking about. As another writer in a time of war, I set out to capture the feelings of the young people who have been exposed to it - their fear, their loss, and ultimately their hope." Rebecca Rupp and her family live in Swanton, Vermont.
