Editor and Publications Manager (children's and YA), Sydney

Inner Sydney located, Walker Books Australia has been bringing the best children’s books to Australian children for over 20 years. We are a market leader in quality picture books (fiction and non-fiction) we are also passionate about junior, middle grade and young adult fiction and are renowned as a haven for highly talented authors and illustrators, both emerging and award-winning.

We are searching for someone with several years of book editing experience at a trade publisher to work alongside our publisher and art department in the role of Editor and Publications Manager.

• In your role you will manage the production of a variety of titles including picture books, junior fiction, young adult fiction and non-fiction, from manuscript to printed book. You will carry out structural editing and copy-editing and proofreading as workload allows.

• In your role you will manage the workflow of our publications within the editorial department working closely alongside our art department, production, finance and marketing teams, ensuring all of the projects meet their required deadlines.

The ideal candidate will be someone who is comfortable working independently as well as playing a supporting role. You’ll need to be highly organised and able to efficiently juggle diverse tasks while also remaining calm, friendly and professional. This role will suit an enthusiastic editor looking to be busy with a variety of tasks who understands a small team dynamic.

This is THE role for a true all-rounder, essentially someone who is motivated by working alongside, supporting and making a valuable contribution to the books we make.

A passion for children’s and YA books is essential, with a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the children’s and YA book market. Preference will be given to applicants with direct experience in children’s publishing.

Work Experience:

Walker Books’ Publishing and Editorial Work Experience Program assists students in meeting their educational requirements, developing and enhancing their skills and knowledge while experiencing the ‘real’ world of work.

Based in Sydney, NSW, this Publishing and Editorial internship provides an introduction to the Publishing Industry, focusing on publishing and editorial responsibilities.

Publishing and Editorial:
• Read and comment on manuscript submissions
• Check page proofs and ebook files
• Assist designers with scanning of art and picture research
• Assist editors with fact checking and proofreading
• Assist with general admin tasks relating to the publishing team.
• Assist sales, marketing and publicity departments ad hoc where required

Program Structure:
• The standard duration of the program is 2 days per week for up to 8 weeks, negotiable.
• Participants will be assigned a mentor who will be their main point of contact during their work experience.

Conditions of Program:
• Participants must have an endorsement from their school/uni/programs. This internship must be recognised as part of their training/studies.
• Personal injury insurance for the student must be covered by the relevant education institute or program.
• This is an unpaid internship program
