Managing Editor (Children's and YA), Sydney

Inner Sydney located, Walker Books Australia has been bringing the best children’s books to Australian children for over 25 years. We are a market leader in quality picture books (fiction and non-fiction) we are also passionate about junior, middle grade and young adult fiction and are renowned as a haven for highly talented authors and illustrators, both emerging and award-winning.

We are searching for someone with several years of book editing experience at a trade publisher to work alongside our Publisher and art department in the role of Managing Editor. In this new role we are looking for someone to come on board with a passion for implementing processes within a small department.

The ideal candidate will be someone who is comfortable working independently as well as playing a supporting role. You’ll need to be highly organised and able to efficiently juggle diverse tasks while also remaining calm, friendly and professional.
A passion for children’s and YA books is essential, with a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the children’s and YA book market. Preference will be given to applicants with direct experience in children’s publishing.

In your role you will:

• Manage the publishing schedules and overall workflow of our local publications and of the titles selected for publication within the Walker Group. These include picture books, junior fiction, YA fiction and non-fiction books.

• Work on seasonal lists to ensure timely delivery of manuscripts, copy, and sales materials, including managing freelance copyeditors and proofreaders.

• Work with our Group editors to ensure that corrections to their editions of our local titles are taken in.

• Develop or refine procedures to improve existing workflows and ensure that interdepartmental best practices and standards are in maintained.

• Lead department meetings, set agendas, produce minutes.

• Maintain title data within our Biblio system and communicate changes company-wide.

• Help distribute materials internally and internationally.

• Manage book projects (new, ebooks, reuse, buy-ins), as necessary.

• Be proficient in copyediting, proofreading and originating book-related material.


• 5+ years managing editorial experience, preferably in a trade house.

• Experience working with remote teams a plus.

• Proven communication and interpersonal skills, including diplomacy and an ability to work collegially with a variety of stakeholders and with appropriate assertiveness to ensure deadlines are met.

• Solid organisational skills, with an aptitude for process development and innovation.
