Toby Alone

By Timothee de Fombelle
Illustrated by Francois Place

An award winning adventure -- with a powerful ecological message -- set in a captivating miniature world.

Toby is just one and a half millimetres tall, and he’s the most wanted person in his world, the great oak Tree. When Toby’s father makes a ground-breaking discovery, he realises that exploiting it could do damage to their world. Refusing to reveal the secret to an enraged community, Toby’s parents have been imprisoned. Only Toby has managed to escape, but for how long?

  • A gripping fantasy story of a miniature world under threat and a boy hunted by his own people -- "The Borrowers" for the twenty-first century.
  • Winner of numerous awards, including France’s Prix Sorcieres and, in translation, Italy’s Premio Andersen prize, Toby’s extraordinary story continues in "Elisha’s Eyes", out in 2009.

Review

Toby Alone has a good theme and plot. How it is written makes it all seem real. I think lots of kids will like reading it. It is a easy but interesting read, 9 years and up could probably read it. My favourite part was when they went into the mistletoe prison. Jack, aged 12
