This fascinating futuristic fantasy, the first of five, is Mad Max meets Yu-Gi-Oh.
Set in the future, the world is divided into three factions: humans, beasts and Meks (machines). 12-year-old Mei's scientist mother has been kidnapped by Meks and her father takes her to live in the skyvillage, a floating world above China, for safety. Mei’s father leaves her with the Tree Book, which holds special powers and links her to Rom, a boy living in post-apocolyptic Las Vegas. Their unlikely relationship and the mysterious Tree Book are at the centre of this surprising adventure.
Monk Ashland is a pseudonym for Chris Rettstatt, who was given the name Monk after shaving his head. This is Nigel and Monk’s first collaboration.
Review
I think it is on a par with the Alex Rider series. I like the whole demon theme and the underground cave. I think the sky village and all the air balloons are really cool. Jack, aged 12
