Girls FC Book 6: What's Ukrainian For Football?

By Helena Pielichaty

Girls FC: the best team for football and friendship.

Nika Kozak is playing in a special tournament to celebrate the World Cup, and each team is to be given a country to represent. Nika is delighted when her team is selected as the Ukraine, the country where she was born and brought up. The rest of the team are all disappointed, though, they wanted to be England. Nika feels upset, until Uncle Bohdan tells her about a match in Kiev during the Second World War. As Nika listens, she becomes more and more proud of her country and is determined to rally her side.

  • An important lesson for all is in the pages of this book - Be proud of where you come from and who you are.

About the author

Helena Pielichaty (pronounced Pierre-li-hatty) is the bestselling author of numerous children’s books, including the highly successful Simone’s Letters, which was nominated for the Carnegie Medal. Her series, The After School Club, has eight titles and the bind-up, Clubbing Together, sold more than 25,000 copies in its first six months. A local girls’ under elevens team helps with the inspiration and tactical know-how for Girls FC, but Helena has been an avid fan of women’s football for many years. Football clearly runs in the family as her aunt was in a women’s team in the 1950s and her daughter has been playing since she was ten (she is now twenty-three!). Helena lives in Nottinghamshire with her husband and has two grown-up children.
